- You should log into Windows as the admin user to install and run the free QuickBooks File Doctor tool.
- Download the free tool.
- If prompted, select Save and then launch the saved file.
Where's the file?
If you successfully downloaded the File Doctor application, but don't know where the file is located:
- Use the steps below based on your Operating System.
- Windows 8 or 7: On your keyboard press the Windows Logo button + F keys
- Windows Vista: Right-click the Windows Logo button and choose Search
- Windows XP: Click the Windows Start button and choose Search > Files or Folders > All files and folders
- In the search field, type qbfd.exe and then click search or press the Enter key.
- Once the file has been found, you can begin installation by double clicking the icon in the search results window.
- Follow the built-in instructions to install.
- Once installed, double-click the File Doctor icon on your desktop

Fix common installation errors using the
QBInstall tool
The QBInstall tool will automatically attempt to detect and repair the error you are experiencing when installing QuickBooks.
1.Download the QBInstall Tool and save it to your desktop.

2.Double-click the QBInstallDiagnosticTool.exe.
If you see Unable to locate QuickBooks installation files, you will need to re-run the installer to populate the installation files in the temp folder, which the QBInstall tool uses for repairs.
If you see No Error Details Found, then the QBInstall tool did not detect any errors with your installation.
If you see an Error Detected, click the Proceed button to apply the recommended fix.
3.After the QBInstall tool applies the fix, you will need to reboot your computer, then try the installation again.

Unable to reconcile accounts or to create, print, or email .pdf files
Fix the problem by downloading the QuickBooks Print and PDF Repair tool
- Download and run the QuickBooks Print and PDF Repair Tool.

- Once the tool completes, try the .pdf file-related task that originally generated the error.
- If the error still occurs, please try rebooting your computer and then try again.

Windows Server 2008 and Server 2012 users ONLY, follow these steps if the PDF tool does not resolve the issue.
Verify XPS Services are Enabled for Server 2008 and Server 2012:
Due to the technical nature of the steps, you may want to reach out to your IT Professional if you run into any trouble or problems performing these steps.
For Windows Server 2008 and Server 2012, the XPS Services are usually turned off by default which can conflict with QuickBooks if you use the full program (not Database Manager only) on your server.
- On you server, you need to either log on as the Administrator or user with administrator rights.
- Follow the steps in the Enabling XPS in Windows Server 2008 article to ensure the XPS Viewer is enabled.
- Once you have ensured the XPS Viewer is enabled, try your PDF related task again in QuickBooks.
